And do saddle pads make a difference?
This video topic was inspired by a subscriber. We use our BodiTrak pressure mat to see how much higher the pressure is under the saddle at a jump landing compared to riding on flat ground. We then run the same tests with a wool fleece pad and a SQUISH Pad to see if additional padding helps reduce the pressure transferred to the horse's back.

    Good job Justin, so relieved to see you address the relationship between girth shape and anatomy in this video, The best choice will be correct for each individual horse, and all horses are different! What works well for one, can be wrong and extremely uncomfortable for the next. Utilize the options available, it's not necessary for horse or Rider to fight your tack. Your billets should travel straight down into the buckles, not at an angle forward or back. ..

    I don’t understand. Your may 2023 video debunks the differences between the pads. Now a year later you are saying there is nearly 100% difference between the standard and the more expensive saddle pads? I’m not trying to be critical. I know I’m missing something as I’m new to horse world.

    • @TotalSaddleFit
      @TotalSaddleFit 16 днів тому

      Excellent question. The 2023 video you are referring to shows that the actual peak/max PSI under a saddle is not that high... far lower than most would imagine. And it "debunks" the need for heavy duty impact materials like plastic or hard foams, given we do not need to protect the horse's back from severe impacts (as proven by the pressure sensing mat). Instead it suggests that impact/movement dampening is much more effective at reducing pressure over the duration of a ride, and keeping horses' backs safe. As an example, it would be like wearing a backpack on a hike. Your shoulders are not taking hard impacts from the straps, but if the fit and materials are not good you will still be sore after an hour or more. I hope this makes sense 😊

    Ideally the noseband and cheek piece are separate or the noseband has a slot at which to move. As when the reins /bit is engaged, the noseband is aswell. Peak pressures appear more on fixed bit bridles (like this one /Micklem /ps nirak) than none fixed bit bridles (standard cavassons or the quantum bridle). You can read the study on this from gertz & Harrison 2023 - pressure testing for horse comfort

    Each pad seems to have recycled wool felt touching the horse's back. My horse doesn't like this material, it makes her itch. Do you have an option for this?

  • @blkgryphon
    @blkgryphon 2 місяці тому

    Questions: 1) Wouldn't there be a fair amount of variation depending on the saddle itself -- for example, what kind of flocking it has (air, wool, etc.), how thick that flocking is and how much spring/shock absorption there is in it? 2) Have you done any testing of your Squish pad against other brands that purport to offer significant protection? 3) To what do you attribute the uneven right/left pressures -- lead the horse is on? Thank you!

    • @TotalSaddleFit
      @TotalSaddleFit 2 місяці тому

      Yes the saddle definitely ought to make a difference. We intentionally used prominent jumping saddle brands with this test so it would be representative to what most riders are using when the jump. But thicker panels, wool panels, etc would presumably be an improvement. We have tested the SQUISH Pad against many popular brands of pads, but we don't plan on releasing that out of respect to the other brands. Some day we may try to find a generic way to publish something along these lines, although we certainly won't call out brands by names 😀. As for the uneven pressures I can't say for sure. Likely it is how the horse landed and where the rider's balance was. Thanks for the questions!

    What about those people that have a good saddle that fits their horse just fine with no issues and then they add a fleece pad or gel pad and it ends up being too much padding in certain areas, for instance, at the withers where the fleece pad is thicker and then ends And is just adding extra thickness in an area where the saddle had already fit correctly. I’ve seen this so many times where people want to add a nice fuzzy colored pad and extra padding to try and make their horse comfortable but they end up adding too much or more than what their horse needed for a saddle that already fits well. You can see where the hair is rubbing and breaking off because it’s pinching right there or dry spots. What do you recommend when someone wants to do that? Do you recommend that they have the saddle adjusted if they want to add a fleece pad or a different type of extra pad? I would love to see more of this really good information, backed by technology in science with saddle fitting and adding extra pads to saddles that already fit well and other situations that are really common. Thank you so much great video.

    • @TotalSaddleFit
      @TotalSaddleFit 2 місяці тому

      Thank you so much! That's a good question. Since every horse/saddle pair is different you always want to make that call individually. A few general things worth mentioning on this topic: Having a saddle that errs on the narrow side of tree width isn't ideal and could lead to a scenario like this. Additionally, a saddle with tree points that are too short can exacerbate this as well because it will have a higher tendency to squeeze the withers, instead of resting at the base of the withers on either side.

    My best friend who had ridden horses with me for over 20 years recently told me I HAVE TO buy one of these because she has liked them so much and I end up being very picky on saddles due to the breeds I prefer. I have had a consistent problem for 28 years of saddles that will hinder some of the "hot" breeds shoulder range of motion such as Arabs and Saddlebreds and we never had such an invention 30 years ago. The horse's entire body and demeanor changes when they can freely move vs when they can't under saddle. Now the dressage riders in my area are using them. . . .I will say that a straight cinch just doesn't work on a round barreled horse with sprung ribs like many Arabs have. . . it's just terrible.

    Great information, can I ask about the analogy of a shoe that fits and then you put an extra sock on and it creates tightness and pressure points. This analogy is used a lot in regards to saddle pads. If a saddle is correctly fitted to a horse would a pad then affect the fitting and make it tighter? I use pads all the time but I do worry maybe sometimes I am causing pressure points

    I know treeless saddles are controversial in some circles and vary greatly across build quality - but would you say the same general principles apply (pressure distribution/dissipation over impact)? Obviously in a treeless saddle there is more potential for point pressure such as from stirrup leather attachment points or girth, so I would think it would be similar only more important to dissipate the weight. I'd be curious to see the data on that.

  • @shelmstedt
    @shelmstedt 3 місяці тому

    Omg! This made absolutely no sense. Any saddle pad is fine with a horse. The issue is that very few people check the saddle fit. And learn to ride. The best saddle or pad will not protect the horse‘s back from bad riding. The true issue I am facing is that the saddle makers have no clue about horses and produce a saddle that looks fancy but doesn’t fit any horse.

      @@laracroce5814 Oh so sorry if you misunderstood, I was not being critical of your comment just making my own. It is somewhat amusing why everything that goes wrong and can't be explained suddenly becomes "a back issue" I find myself smiling because pads are expensive and I have always thought somewhat dubious of their efficacy. I have a failed racehorse who came to us as "dangerous" to ride because of "kissing spine" which he doesn't have and neither is he dangerous in the right hands (that applies to most horses). When I first started riding (100 years ago it seems) pads and numnahs were not that popular only amongst the more elite. Once again sorry if I came over as having a go x

      Dr. DeClue "gets it" and I'd love to see her collaborate on a pad or any other tack! I've learned so much from her.

    horses generally have 18, occasionally a 19th rib, because Arabians have a shorter spine they have 17 ribs, Love your products, I have your western cinch and so do most of my clients, keep up the good work inventing products that allow our horses to be more comfortable !
